Aug. 5th, 2012 09:20 pmToday during a family bonding trek to Ikea1 I found myself enamored with a cheap plastic sewing machine.
Now, I have been a very good grown up in terms of my credit card spending as of late, but this weekend. Oh this weekend. This weekend I may have put some financial red in my ledger.
First there were Comic Con passes to buy on Saturday.
I couldn't get the page to load, and waited too long to try again, so instead of buying 1 4-Day pass, I ended up buying 4 1-Day passes. So basically I get to go to the Con, but not the Wednesday Preview Night, and there's a slight chance I'll have to stand in line four times to get in, though I that chance is very slight. Good news, if I get a good hotel spot I might actually be able to spend the day at the San Diego Zoo, a place I've yet to visit even though I've been to San Diego four times now.
Then there was Fluevog.
I...wasn't planning on going, but then a friend of mine from out of town went. I wasn't planning on buying, but then they had the shoes I've been coveting for well over a year in my size. They are beautiful. I am happy. There will be joy.
And then today there was Ikea.
Now...I would like to point out that the only thing I really bought at Ikea of any sort of cost was a $30 rattan tuffet for my bottom to sit on during what I hope will be meditation time. Because...I could really use some trufax meditation time.
I got in and out of Ikea having spent under $50 of my own money.
It's just...that I then saw this sewing machine in their fabric section. And I've been telling everyone within ear shot how I want to learn how to sew, but that the machine I inherited from my grandmother is HEAVY and intimidating. This...this is brightly colored, plastic, and looks pretty beginner level.
But it was $80, and I didn't want to spend even MORE money.
That's when Mom stepped in and said: You know, I don't think I got you a birthday present this year. Which...no it's true. There weren't much in the way of birthday shenanigans this year. I mean, Me and Roomie Joe went to New York and had waffles in the Park and did much hanging out with friends wot live there, but family wise there was no birthday shenanigans.
I told her no, but...there's really no telling Mom no.
So now there's this in my house:

So...there might have to be some dicking around with it sooner, rather than later.
I know it's a ridiculous goal, but I kind of want to see if I can a) get it to work, and b) make a dress for D*C.
Someone talk me out of this.
Or, barring that, talk me through how one makes a dress.
Please?
