Do people have opinions about bike locks? Like, which ones are better than others, and why?

Context:
Last Monday I biked home from a rehearsal held near MIT. Somewhere along the darkened paths of Memorial Drive I lost my keyring.

Not the usb drive and key chain on my key chain, just the ring with my keys on it. If I'm being honest this is more of an annoyance than anything else. There were only four keys on the ring in the first place, two of which were to bike locks, and one of the others went to a lock that's since been changed. The last key, well...there are spares.

But now I find myself in need of a new bike lock, and I'm trying to figure out which way I should go:
- Another U-lock - An actual chain and pad lock? - Combination of both?

Tell me your thoughts about bike locks, because...I've got nothing here.

It's often recommended that people use two locks, although I've never done this myself. Honestly, a lot of bike lock mojo is the deterrence factor- if your lock looks difficult to pick or cut, the thieves will try to steal someone else's, because criminals are a lazy and superstitious lot. That said, I use a Kryptonite u-lock most of the time, and when I don't I use the Kryptonite chain lock I bought from an online motorcycle store after my road bike was stolen. The only problem with that one is that it weighs twelve pounds and I have to wear it across my torso like a bike courier if I don't want my legs chafing against it.

Campus police always recs U-locks to the students. They're a lot harder to cut, so less crimes of opportunity...

Same! I just got the whole spiel from our campus police, which was primarily "use a U-lock or it's pointless."

I actually do use two locks (most of the time!). I use a cable lock through one of the wheels (the quick release one) and the frame, and then the U-lock on top of that. No special brand or anything but it's been enough that my bike has survived college campuses and metro stations.

(That said, if I'm feeling lazy and just running into a store quickly I probably only use the cable.)
